Nicole Kidman was born to Australian parents – her father Anthony, a biochemist & clinical psychologist and her mother Janelle, a nursing instructor – in Hawaii. When Nicole was four they moved back to Sydney where her interest in acting and the arts blossomed at a young age.
She landed her first movie role at 16 and continued to act in television and movies in Australia throughout the 80’s. In 1989 she landed the part of Dr. Claire Lewicki in ‘Days of Thunder’. Nicole not only broke into the American movies – she also broke into the heart of co-star Tom Cruise. They began dating and married on Christmas Eve in 1990.
Tom and Nicole continued to climb the A-List ladder together and adopted two children together: Isabella & Connor, born in 1992 and 1995.
In 2001 the couple shocked the world when the announced their separation just after their 10th wedding anniversary.
Nicole continued to show off her acting talents in dozens of critically acclaimed performances and winning an Academy Award in 2002 for her role in “Moulin Rouge”.
At an event honoring Australians in January 2005, she met country singer Keith Urban. She shared that she had prayed for him: “I remember thinking, ‘Oh my God, if you ever gave me a man like that, I promise I would be completely devoted for the rest of my life.’ Something that wild. I remembered praying after I met him that I’d meet somebody, if not him, like him.”
The two tied the knot on June 25, 2006 in Sydney at Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel. Nicole gave birth to daughter Sunday Rose on July 7, 2008 and they welcomed another daughter, Faith Margaret, on December 28, 2010, born via surrogate.
She said of having kids so far apart in age: “For Bella and Connor I was a young mother – and for Sunday, I’m an older mother. They’re polar opposites. With Bella, I’m being someone she can confide in, while trying not to tell her what to do. With Sunday, I have to show her, teach her how to do everything … It’s really keeping me on my toes!”
Nicole has been the Goodwill Ambassador of the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) since 2006. Her focus is on violence against women, but she also is very passionate about helping with breast cancer research, as her mother is a breast cancer survivor.
