Looking for the perfect game day bite for munching during March Madness? These robust homemade chili dogs start with an easy, delicious beef chili (no beans here!) that's slathered over your favorite dogs. Cheese and avocado optional, of course.
Homemade Chili Dogs
An overwhelming hit in our household, perfect for a March Madness dinner!
- extra virgin olive oil: 1 tablespoon
- small onion: 1, diced
- ground beef:, 1 lb
- tomato puree: 1 can
- chili powder: 2 tablespoons
- ground cumin: 2 teaspoons
- salt: 1 teaspoon or to taste
- pepper: ½ teaspoon
- hot dogs: 1 package
- hot dog rolls: 1 package
Step 1: Heat the olive oil in a round dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until golden.
Step 2: Add the ground beef to the dutch oven and brown, using a wooden spatula to break apart as you go. Drain excess fat from the pan.
Step 3: Stir in the tomato puree. Season with chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 10 minutes, covered. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
Step 4: Heat hot dogs using your favorite hot dog cooking method. Place each one in a roll.
Step 5: Spoon hot chili over the hot dogs. If desired, serve with shredded cheddar cheese, diced avocado, and diced onions for garnishing.
Note: This recipe makes more chili than you will likely use. Leftovers can be saved and used in dips, on nachos, and more.
